Abstract

La Esperanza (El Carmen de Viboral, Antioquia) was a territory that suffered different and serious forms of violence in the Colombian armed conflict. In this context, the study was carried out with the objective to find out the contribution of popular art practices, carried out as memory works, in grief elaboration of victims of violence in this territory. The methodological design was qualitative, with a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach. A case study was carried out with four inhabitants of the area with whom semi-structured interviews were conducted. We found that artistic practices were a valuable symbolic strategy that allowed participants to rebuild their stories, to bestow new meanings on the violent experiences they had suffered, to work on building the memory of the armed conflict, and to advance in the elaboration of individual and collective grief. We concluded that memory works carried out through popular art practices
contribute to the elaboration of grief in persons and communities affected by violence. Besides, they help to symbolically relocate the losses, to reorder the narrative of fractured lives, and to restore the social fabric torn by violence.
